WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP

Just as life itself is subject to perpetual evolution, so too are the aspirations and identities we harbor. Hamilton-based ceramics collective Casa Studio, has their journey rooted in this exploration—delving into clay collage, tinting clays, and challenging traditional norms through a collaborative, experimental practice that embraces the unpredictable nature of the medium.

We grow up, we observe, we experience the dichotomy between the expectation to find a vocation and the desire to play and discover what the world has to offer. It is the existence of these two worlds that manifests friction and the opportunity to explore new realms. This journey of exploration led Casa Studio to ceramics, delving into an artistic practice that is collaborative, unpredictable and begets letting go of your expectations.

What I want to be when I grow up reflects this process, examining the human experience through the lens of clay. The exhibition features an array of ceramic sculptures and functional pieces, each pushing the boundaries between art and utility. Works include wall-mounted sculptures and hybrid objects that merge form and function in unexpected ways.

This exhibition serves as a testament to the value of play, an ode to the joy of creation, rooted in the pursuit of artistic expression. You are invited to reconnect with the wonder of childhood, embrace curiosity, and dive into a reflective creative discovery.

Curated by Regional Archive, What I want to be when I grow up was held at Monday Press from October 3rd to October 13th, 2024.

As part of the exhibition's programming, Casa Studio hosted a series of pottery painting workshops for the community.

We believe creative opportunities are essential experiences that contribute to community building, promote mental well-being, and foster self-expression. By removing financial barriers to participation, we welcomed community members, youth, and adults to join us in these hands-on workshops. Through this experience, we hoped participants will reconnect with their creative side and appreciate the value and care that go into handmade objects.
